A Little Everyday Magic in Your Tea Cup
There is something undeniably magical about watching a tea change color right before your eyes. Butterfly pea flower teas create rich blues that transform into purples, pinks, and reds with the simple addition of citrus. It feels a bit like a science experiment, a bit like fairy tale magic, and very much like something inspired by classic Disney moments.
This color-changing tea recipe is designed to work with multiple butterfly pea flower blends, each one producing a slightly different shade depending on the ingredients and the amount of butterfly pea blossoms used. The base recipe stays the same, but the color story in your cup will change with each blend.
Color-Changing Butterfly Pea Tea Recipe
This is the core recipe that works across all of the butterfly pea blends listed below. Because these are loose leaf teas, you have full control over strength, color intensity, and sweetness.
Base Recipe
Brew your tea according to the blend’s instructions. Because these are loose leaf teas, you can adjust the amount of butterfly pea blossoms per teaspoon to achieve your desired shade of blue.
Sweeten as desired.
For the deepest blue color, try sweetening with a simple syrup made with butterfly pea blossoms.
For the best overall flavor, coconut-flavored syrup pairs beautifully with all of these blends. There is something about coconut and blue tea that feels instantly nostalgic and comforting.
While the tea is steeping, warm your serving cup by filling it with hot water. Discard the water, then add 1½ teaspoons of lemon juice to the cup. Cover and set aside so the lemon juice warms slightly, or gently heat it in the microwave.
Pour the brewed tea into a white teacup or clear glass, leaving room for the lemon juice.
At the table, add the warm lemon juice and watch the color transform.
For the most dramatic effect, serve in a white cup or clear glass in bright natural light.
Prefer no color change? Simply enjoy a sweet, hot blue cup of tea. It is a beautiful way to warm up on a cold day without adding citrus.

Why Butterfly Pea Tea Changes Color
Butterfly pea flower contains natural pigments called anthocyanins. These pigments react to changes in pH, which is why the tea changes color when lemon juice is added.
In a neutral environment, butterfly pea tea appears blue.
When acidic ingredients like lemon juice are introduced, the pH drops and the pigments shift toward shades of purple, pink, or red.
Other ingredients can also influence the final color:
Green tea adds yellow tones that push blue toward green.
Mint and herbs can soften or lighten the blue.
Red Fruit pieces like dragonfruit and beetroot add warmth and depth to purple shades.
The result is a tea that feels interactive, magical, and endlessly customizable.
