Maybe one of the most popular and widely known teas in existence is Earl Grey. Why? The flavor is simply a classic taste; citrusy and slightly woodsy, Earl Grey is the epitome of tea for many.

Earl Grey was developed in England, we think, and its popularity has been immense in England and Europe from the mid 19th century to today. Smokey and full bodied Chinese black tea mixed with the oil of bergamot (an Italian citrus) are usually the only ingredients in Earl Grey, however there are other varieties that may contain decorative flowers or other flavors. Like many teas that have been around for a while, the story of Earl Grey tea is shrouded in myth and adventure.

To begin with, Earl Grey was a person. The second Earl of Grey, Lord Charles Grey also became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1834. He advocated parliamentary reform and abolished slavery in 1833. Ironically, the famous East India Company, who brought tea to England, ended its trade monopoly with China during his tenure as prime minister. One legend suggests that a member of Earl Grey’s delegation saved a Chinese Mandarin from drowning and the Mandarin sent the recipe to Lord Grey as a gift for rescuing his life. Another tale involves one of Earl Grey’s men sending him a chest of tea that also had the citrus in close proximity; the tea absorbed the citrus aroma and the flavor was created. The famous London tea house, Jacksons of Piccadilly, also lay claim to the blend. They claim that Lord Grey gave one of their partners the recipe in 1830 and they have been producing it ever since.

However it came to be, Earl Grey tea continues to be one of the most popular flavored teas in the west, nearly two centuries after its creation. It has been fueling adventures and thinkers across the globe, and has made its way deep into our pop culture from the Mad Hatter to Capt. Jean Luc Picard. There are now a multitude of types of Earl Grey, with flowers, vanilla, cream, green tea, etc. Our Earl Grey is simple, just China Keemun black tea blended with zesty oil of bergamot, but we are sure that it is among the best and truest of Earl Greys available.
